Australian senator holds up dead salmon during Parliament debate

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - An Australian Greens senator held up a dead salmon in the Australian Parliament Wednesday in protest of proposed laws which would protect salmon farming in Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour.

While speaking in the chamber, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young held up the salmon while questioning the Labor Party.

"On the eve of the election, have you sold out your environment credentials for a rotten, stinking extinction salmon?" Hanson-Young asked.

Hanson-Young previously said that the Labor Party had pushed "rushed laws to gut environment protection in favour of the rotting salmon corporations."

On Tuesday, Australia's federal government introduced a bill which could remove the environment minister's ability to revoke some past decisions, according to SBS News.

The reforms were aimed at preserving the Tasmanian salmon industry at Macquarie Harbour, a World Heritage Area.
