Tennessee residents celebrate Elvis Presley’s 89th birthday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - There was birthday cake and a proclamation Monday at Graceland in Memphis to mark what would have been Elvis Presley's 89th birthday.
Crowds gathered on the lawn of Graceland Mansion for the official proclamation of Elvis Presley Day in Memphis.
There was a huge birthday cake with a record on top, and there was an unveiling of the record of the song, "That's All Right." The song was recorded at the iconic Sun Records Studio in Memphis in July of 1954, and it became the hit that set Elvis on the path to becoming the King of Rock and Roll.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young spoke of the history at the ceremony.
"Elvis Presley represents so much of what's right about Memphis. We are a city that's full of soul. Full of music heritage, and we're going to build on that history," Young shared.
Presley died in August of 1977. He would have been 89 years old.
