George Santos appears in New York court
ISLIP, N.Y. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Embattled U.S. Representative George Santos arrived at a federal courthouse on Long Island Friday.
This is Santo's first court appearance since pleading not guilty to multiple charges in May.
Federal prosecutors have charged Santos with 13 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making false statements to congress.
They claim he misused campaign finance funds for personal expenses, lied about his finances on congressional disclosure forms, and received unemployment benefits while earning $120,000 a year working as a regional director of an investment firm, that later shut down following accusations it was a actually a Ponzi scheme
Santos has denied all of the charges and called the prosecution a politically motivated "witch hunt."
Friday's hearing is expected to focus on scheduling future court dates as the case proceeds. Rep. Santos could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
