Florida chimpanzee sees sun after being caged for 28 years

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A chimpanzee named Vanilla was "in awe" after seeing the sky for the first time. Vanilla was caged for 28 years, according to her caregivers.

She spent most of her life in small cages in a research lab in New York that's now closed. Then, she was transferred to a sanctuary in California, where she was kept inside a chain-link fence cage with, allegedly, no grass.

Vanilla was welcomed outside with a hug from fellow chimpanzee Dwight when she left her enclosure.

According to private sanctuary, Save the Chimps, Vanilla gets along with all other 18 chimps on her island, especially Dwight.

The sanctuary says the two have a playful relationship. Vanilla likes to steal her friend's food.

Vanilla is reportedly enjoying her new environment. When she's not hanging out with Dwight, you can find her chilling on her favorite climbing platform taking in the view.
