METROPOLIS, Illi. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The city of Metropolis is celebrating Superman! The city in Illinois has been celebrating the "Man of Steel" for more than four decades.

The Superman celebration kicked off Friday, with a rededication ceremony for its iconic Superman statue. They've been renovating the statue since 2020, and the renovation was recently completed.

It has been 30 years since the first statue was unveiled in 1993.

The event itself is in its 45th year, and there will be lots of family-friendly activities happening all weekend. People come from all over the world to celebrate the iconic superhero.

"We have a map that everybody marks, and I will tell you that almost every state is marked and we have other countries that come in too. We've had people from Brazil, from China, from England, from Australia..," said Karla Ogle, co-chair of the Superman celebration.

As you may remember, Metropolis is the fictional home of Clark Kent, better known as Superman, made famous in comics, movies and on TV.
