Rep. George Santos to recuse himself from committees

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Congressman George Santos, who has admitted to lying about much of his background, plans to recuse himself from both of his congressional committee assignments.

Two lawmakers tell NBC News Santos shared his decision in a closed door meeting Tuesday.

He is now under investigation by the ethic committee.

His office then released a statement:

"He has reserved to see it until he has been cleared up both campaign and personal financial investigations."

The New York Republican was on the House Small Business and Science Committees.

Santos has been entangled in controversy since The New York Times reported that much of his life story was simply not true. This included that his work history and personal life.

As a result, a number of his congressional colleagues have called for his resignation.
