St. Louis officials give updates on Monday shooting
ST. LOUIS, Miss. (NBC) - On Monday, October 26, 2022, officials gave updates on Monday's shooting at a St. Louis High School.
19-year-old Orlando Harris opened fire at Central VPA High School, killing a student and teacher and leaving several other injured.
Not only that, officials said that the shooter's family is cooperating with the investigation.
"They're also heartbroken over this incident. And in the impression that I get from the investigators who spoke to the mother is that they've done everything that they could possibly have done. But sometimes that's not enough," St. Louis Police Department Chief Mike Sachs expressed.
The family telling investigators they made several efforts to combat the suspect's mental health issues.
"They've hooked him up with a medical professional mental health provider. They've been supportive of him. Whenever they noticed him kind of stepping out of line or going out of turn they always worked to try and get him back on his medication or back into therapy or whatever it is that he needed," Sachs spoke.
Also today, an FBI special agent said St. Louis has seen an uptick in hoax threats since the shooting.
"The volume has been so great that we're not able to get out and identify and make contact with every single person who has made a hoax threat at this time. So the easiest way for us to address that as a law enforcement group across the metro area is simply for all the local police departments to assign armed resources to be in the school," FBI St. Louis Special Agent Jay Greenberg detailed.
This resulted in the agency putting more armed police officers around school areas.
