Lunar New Year celebrations begin around the world

(KYMA, KECY/CBS) - Celebrations began as landmarks around the world were glowing red to signal the start of Lunar Year.

Red is a color to symbolize luck and happiness in China, as well as marking the Spring Festival and Winter Olympics.

The Tokyo Tower of Japan, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Headquarters, and the Azadi Tower in Tehran all were lit red to join in the festivities.

Aside from red lights, other celebrations included setting off balloons, showing off Chinese characters and playing Chinese national anthems.

The Beijing Winter Olympics are also set for the week of February 1, as many begin preparations for the games to start.
