Second crew member of American fighter jet rescued

(NBC, KYMA) - The second crew member of an American fighter jet that was shot down over Iran has been rescued.

A senior Trump Administration official tells NBC News the rescue was a joint operation between the U.S. military and the CIA, and involved the intelligence agency spreading false reports that the second pilot had already been rescued while the mission was being planned.

The F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down Friday and its pilot was located shortly after the crash.

The American military then raced to find the plane's backseater, or weapons systems officer, after a regional governor offered a bounty for the crew.

According to President Donald Trump, the airman, a colonel, was injured but not critically.

Meanwhile, the war with Iran is now entering a sixth week, and President Trump reiterated his threat Saturday that Iran has until Monday to open the critical Strait of Hormuz or, in his words, "all Hell will reign down"
