VA report highlights growing concern over TBIs in Veterans

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A new report from the Department of Veterans Affairs sheds light on a growing crisis among veterans: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

According to the report, more than 185,000 veterans have been diagnosed with a TBI, though experts believe the actual number is much higher due to misdiagnosis and underreporting.

Veterans who suffer from TBIs face an increased risk of depression, suicide, and long-term neurological decline. Advocates say more support is needed to help those struggling with these challenges.

Matthew "Whiz" Buckley, a decorated Navy TOPGUN graduate, emphasized the severity of the issue.

"Since it's the veteran community, we all kinda go, 'Oh, that’s sad,' and we move on," Buckley said. "So it's just devastating. Every day, every hour, there are veterans who are checking out, and it's even more devastating to me because I know it's preventable."

Organizations like Disabled American Veterans (DAV) are working to provide direct support for struggling veterans. Keri Mroz, a Chapter Service Officer for DAV, explained the organization's role in assisting veterans with basic needs.

"If you're a disabled American veteran in need of assistance, whether it's an electric bill, gas bill, or phone bill, contact us. If it's a valid need, we will pay directly to APS or meet you at Frye and fill your gas tank. That’s why we're here," Mroz said.

Advocates urge more awareness and resources to address the long-term effects of TBIs and prevent further suffering among veterans.

If you or someone you know needs support, the Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7 by calling 988 and press 1.
