Security concerns reduce visits to Los Algodones

KYMA

LOS ALGODONES, Mexico (KYMA) - Los Algodones reported a 40% decrease in Canadian tourism.

According to Baja California's Tourism Department, the decline has affected the economy of the Mexicali Valley.

Miguel Ángel Torres Sánchez, Mexicali's Tourism Delegate, said they believe it is the result of political tensions between the United States and Canada, which have also affected the Mexican border region.

"Canadian tourism has been affected by international issues, but we are about to inaugurate a direct flight from Tijuana to Vancouver, and with that we hope it can benefit the rise of tourism throughout Baja California," Sánchez explained.

Many Canadian tourists used to stay in the United States, and then visit Los Algodones. Security alerts have also contributed to the decline.

Another tourist destination that has been affected is San Felipe.
