At least 23 dead, 12 injured in discount store fire in Mexico
HERMOSILLO, Mexico (NBC, KYMA) - A fire at a popular discount store in northwest Mexico has claimed the lives of at least 23 people and injured 12 others, according to state authorities.
The deadly blaze erupted Saturday at a Waldo's Dollar Store in Downtown Hermosillo, the capital of the State of Sonora.
Authorities say children were among the victims.
According to Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chavez, preliminary investigations suggest that the deaths were caused by "inhalation of toxic gases."
City officials say they believe the fire originated in a transformer and was not intentional, although the exact cause is under investigation.
It's still unclear if there was an explosion that led to the fire.
