More than 150 power poles in Mexicali knocked down due to powerful storm

MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY/T3) - More than 150 power poles were knocked down after a powerful storm hit Mexicali.

The damage caused prolonged blackouts across several neighborhoods in the city over the weekend.

Heavy rain and strong winds also brought down trees, caused minor flooding in some areas, ripped the roof off one building and damaged billboards.

"We thought there was coming a little wind and that it wouldn't affect us, but when it came it lifted the roofs of the houses, knocked down trees, it caused two energy power transformers explode, the house was fill with water and we had to get it out little by little," said Jesus Martinez, who was affected by the storm.

The city set up a temporary shelter in case there's more activity this week.
