2025 Special Olympics Powerlifting Competition takes place in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Some exceptional athletes put their strength to the test at the 2025 Special Olympics Powerlifting Competition in Yuma.

For the fourth consecutive year, the event took place at the 4th Avenue Gym.

A total of 40 athletes from Yuma and Kingman, Arizona competed in lifts like squats, deadlifts, and the bench press.

4th Avenue Gym owner Justin Haile says nothing is more thrilling than these athletes breaking their own records.

"After you see the smiles and excitement on these guys' faces, the least I can do is give back. One of the parents was thanking me yesterday and I said, 'Thank you. What you do everyday at home, you're the true hero,'" says Haile.

The best of Saturday's performers will move to compete at nationals later on this year.
