BMX rider faces a long road to recovery after skate park accident, community steps up
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) -Â Antonio "Bobo" Garza has been a familiar face in the BMX community for years, but a serious crash left him with multiple fractures and a long road to recovery.
On February 16, Bobo was riding at a local skate park when his bike's fork suddenly snapped sending him face first into the ground.
This left him with several fractures in his face as well as brain swelling and bleeding. He was airlifted to St. Joseph's in Phoenix to undergo surgery.
Michelle Johnson, the mother of Bobo, says, "They did a whole facial reconstruction with plates and screws. He's still gonna have to have two more surgeries. He broke a lot of his teeth inside. They're probably gonna have to fix bone and then put implants in there."
Now back home, he's recovering, but there are still challenges his family is facing.
"There was a helicopter ride, an ambulance ride, ICU for almost a week, surgeries. We're just trying to figure out how were gonna pay for it all," said Johnson.
While Bobo focuses on recovery, the BMX community is doing what they can to make sure he doesn't do it alone.
BMX rider Kyle Olaiz says, "We're helping him with whatever he needs for recovery. We're helping with everyday stuff and taking care of his kids and his mom is doing a heck of a job being there for him too. Were here to support."
And Bobo's mom says this doesn't go unnoticed.
"The outreach of the community and the support from everybody in Yuma is extraordinary," she said.
Bobo's family has created a GoFundMe link to help with medical costs and expenses. If you'd like to help, you can click here.
