New organization aims to clean up the Lower Colorado River

First event set for April 13

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A newly formed community group, Friends of the Lower Colorado River, is taking action to preserve and protect the waterway by organizing cleanup events.

The organization, founded just two months ago, was created by a group who wanted to combat the growing issue of litter along the riverbanks.

Working alongside the Bureau of Reclamation and the Bureau of Land Management, the group is focused on making the river a cleaner and safer space for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Their first official cleanup event is scheduled for Sunday, April 13, at 9:30 a.m. at the Gila River Confluence.

Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to join in and help remove trash and debris from the area. The group is also seeking donations of supplies such as gloves, trash grabbers, hand sanitizer, and water to support their efforts.

"Our goal is to create a ripple effect," said Wendy, one of the founding members. "If we can clean it up and keep it nice, we hope others will be inspired to do the same."

The long-term vision of the Friends of the Lower Colorado River includes placing a permanent dumpster at the confluence to make proper disposal more accessible.
