City of Yuma selects new Chief of Police

City of Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The City of Yuma has selected Thomas Garrity as the new Chief of Police.

In a press release, Garrity has 32 years of law enforcement under his belt.

Not only that, he served as Commander in the Prince William County, Virginia, Police Department.

Garrity will then succeed Chief Susan Smith as she had announced her plans to retire in late January 2023.

Since her appointment as YPD chief in 2019, Smith has served with the YPD for 30 years.

“Words cannot express how honored and humbled I am to be selected to serve as the next Chief of Police for Yuma,” Garrity said.

“The women and men of this department are dedicated to partnering with the community to make Yuma a great place to work, live and play. Together we will continue this important work. My family and I are excited to be a part of the future of Yuma..."

All in all, Garrity's first day will be on January 9, 2023.
