Local parents turning to social media for updates on where to find baby formula

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A nationwide baby formula shortage has caused parents to scramble for anything they can get their hands on and while the shortage has affected many parents are getting creative on making it work.

Parents have started to venture out to different cities even crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to find formula as Mexico isn’t facing a baby formula shortage.

A local mother, Makayla Rivera, says she's also faced the heat of the shortage.

“I personally haven’t gone to San Luis or Mexico, but mom’s in the group, um, do a post like from San Luis like the Walmart’s, the Del Sol’s… and then one mom did go to Mexico and posted pictures to show like Mexico is not having a shortage, so that is an option," said Rivera.

The White House has announced a second "Operation Fly Formula" shipment flight for later this week.

This transport will bring 114 pallets of Gerber Good Start Extensive HA Infant Formula.

As parents face the shortage, they are getting creative in finding formulas.

Rivera says many parents in Yuma are relying on social media groups for updates on where to find formula whether it’s coming from store shelves or someone’s pantry.

“And there’s also “Yuma Baby Formula Locator” on Facebook and where moms and dads post pictures of what they have extra or samples and then they give it away for free to whoever is in need,” said Rivera.

According to Data Assembly, baby formula’s out-of-stock level is at a high rate of 43% across the country, leaving parents to patrol grocery stores for the formula their babies need.
