Mixologists wanted: Somerton challenging all who dabble in the art of cocktails

The city is looking for vendors and challengers for its Battle of the Cheladas

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - If you're not from the Desert Southwest or any Latin-infused community, the word "chelada" may sound strange.

Simply put the Michelada, Chelada for short is basically the marriage between a Bloody Mary and well, any beer.

But, the cocktail has exploded in popularity in just the last decade. In its simplest forms, the drink mixes beer, tomato, lime juice, and a few other ingredients.

But, like with another drink, everyone has their own slight detail to make it their own. Some have been known to add shrimp, tostito chips, candy among other things.

So, with the growing popularity, the City of Somerton delivered a challenge to all mixologists far and wide. Come to Somerton and claim your title at the 2022 Battle of the Cheladas.

On May 7, competitors will set up shop at Council Park (801 Council Avenue) and battle it out. Other vendors are also welcome to attend.

For more information on this event, you can call Brissa Garcia at 928-655-0247. You can also visit the City of Somerton on its website or social media platforms.
