Schools awarded Early Literacy Grant

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Six Yuma School District One elementary schools will receive $230,000 in grant funds for the 2020-2021 school year.

The school district says these funds will be used to support reading programs for grades kindergarten through 3rd grade.

The following schools will receive funding: CW McGraw, George Washington Carver, OC Johnson, Palmcroft, Pecan Grove and Roosevelt Elementary.

Yuma School District one says these funds can also be used for its all-day kindergarten programs which provide reading and literacy support.

The Early Literacy Grant averages to about 150 dollars per student from Kindergarten through third grade. The district says the grant will fund instructional materials, staffing, professional defelop and assessment materials.

“Without the grant, we would only have a half-time reading specialist," says Angela Logan, OC Johnson principal.

"This helps us tremendously because it allows us to have a robust and consistent reading intervention program.”
