Littlewood Fine Arts to close building in light of pandemic
They are looking to reinvent the Yuma arts community in a different way.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - In light of the Coronavirus, a popular local business has decided to shut their doors. Littlewood Fine Arts and Community Co-op will not be reopening their brick and mortar gallery.
They announced the permanent closure, of the main street location, on their facebook page last week.
This downtown venue is most known for being a space, in the community, for artists present and display their art on all mediums. The owners devastated about the closure but still have hope.
The Coronavirus pandemic took a toll on the co-op’s memberships, dropping 80%. That is a big chunk of the funding for the non-profit organization.
So much so, the business has yet to receive relief support from any of the grants they applied for.
Despite the insufficient financial situation, the owners plan to reinvent the yuma fine arts scene.
Isaac Russell is a founder & director of Littlewood Fine Arts and Community Co-op.
“We will reinvent ourselves and be creative. The co-op is about its people. The people are still around their art is still important perhaps now more than ever. Wha are people doing when they’re stuck at home in quarantine. They are making art they are watching films. The arts are absolutely vital to being human and when you are separated from other humans, as much as so many of us are now, has really highlighted that,” he said.
The owners also tell me, the co-op will continue to thrive on. They are hoping artists will stay tuned for what’s in store.
Throughout the years, Littlewood was home to art shows, music performances, classes, and even more. Future plans are in the works without the physical location.
