Yuma salons, barbershops re-open with new safety protocols

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Salons and barbershops in arizona were officially able to open their doors again today… but under tight guidelines from the CDC and State Board of Cosmetology.

While the doors are now open for most salons and barbershops; now more than ever, stylists are going the extra mile to keep their clients safe.

We first introduced you to Jessica’s Beauty Boutique in Yuma, more than a month ago.

“This has been my dream since I was a little girl and to get it taken away with something that could have been dealt with way before, it does hurt,” Gutierrez said.

Stylists here are now adjusting to the new-normal, with precautionary protocols during their hair appointments.

Marcy Reyes is a stylist at Jessica’s Beauty Boutique.

"Even though we cannot be six feet away if it’s just a haircut you know we try to do the haircut for you, if it’s a color you will put on the color, kinda stand back a little bit to have a chit-chat with the client and if we have to, we will walk away and go to the back to kind of keep that social distancing happening as well," Reyes said.

Prior to even stepping foot in the salon, customers are asked to wash their hands using a sink and hand soap station outside.”

"We have our guests wait for us inside their car or outside. We shoot them a message or a text to let them know it’s safe to come inside.”

“It’s a little bit different putting on color and foiling and cutting but we have been working around it pretty nicely.”

The boutique also taking client’s temperature at the door and you are required to wear a mask at all times.
Customers more than willing to comply.

Hailey Mendivio is a longtime client of Jessica’s Beauty Boutique.

“I’m very excited because we tried to do it at my house and it kinda got messed up. I’m really happy that we’re going to be able to fix it.”

She's happy to have some parts of life getting back to normal.

“I think it’s important because we don’t know if anything is wrong, it’s important for us to check and just make sure we are safe.”

The owner of the salon tells us, they want their clients to feel safe and protected during this new experience.

“We’re excited to see everybody back in here in the chairs. Getting everybody beautiful. Super nervous just because we just want to make sure we’re doing everything right and protecting everybody the right way. And just overwhelming with all the different rules and regulations we’ve been implementing with. “

Gutierrez plans to hire an additional staff member to handle the guest’s safety… which is definitely needed now while the stylists have additional responsibilities.
