Consulate of Mexico hosts annual Binational Pink Ribbon Walk in Calexico
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) - A powerful display of cross-border solidarity took center stage on Monday as the Consulate of Mexico in Calexico hosted its Annual Binational Pink Ribbon Walk.
Held as a cornerstone event for Binational Health Week 2026, the walk brought community members together to champion breast cancer prevention, early detection, and proactive healthcare.
The procession saw participants walk 10 blocks toward the U.S.–Mexico border wall, where they shared a symbolic connection with a corresponding group marching simultaneously on the Mexicali side.
Organizers emphasized that the cross-border coordination symbolizes a shared global commitment to health, hope, and saving lives.
The driving force behind this year's massive turnout remains the severe global toll of the disease.
"It is a disease that unfortunately still takes lives...in the U.S. of over 43,000 people, in Mexico over 8,000, and worldwide it's almost 700,000 people, women mostly, that lose their lives because of breast cancer," said Rocío Vázquez, Head Consul of the Mexican Consulate in Calexico.
Vázquez noted that the energetic, creative demonstration serves as an essential vehicle for spreading awareness across borders.
"This is an energetic, a very—you can say artistic and creative way of sending the word out, and obviously sending the message that this is not something that is obviously just the country, it's worldwide," Vázquez explained.
For cancer survivor and event participant Maria Martinez, the collective gathering holds deep personal significance.
"It's very special because I feel that it brings us all together to support each other," Martinez shared.
Though Martinez overcame a different form of cancer, she expressed immense gratitude for the community's willingness to stand united against the disease.
"I get very excited when people gather up like this and we speak up to get more health benefits and to also encourage each other to take care of our health," Martinez said. "And to exercise, and to eat healthy, to talk about how we overcame cancer."
The Binational Pink Ribbon Walk is part of a larger, month-long campaign spearheaded by the Mexican Consulate aimed at elevating public awareness and bringing critical health vulnerabilities to light.
Officials stress that public engagement is vital to turning advocacy into actionable healthcare solutions.
"It's something that you have to be very much aware that it's not just something that they talk about in the news," Consul Vázquez emphasized. "It's a reality."
While the walk concluded Monday afternoon, the push for community well-being continues. Free health resources, educational information, and preventative guidance remain available all week long through the Mexican Consulate in Calexico, located at 408 Heber Ave.
