Imperial Valley boxing girls on the road to Canada
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Four Imperial County girls will be competing at a boxing tournament in Canada.
The Sparta boxing girls say they have been preparing for several months now as they prepare to give it their all at the West Coast Wonder Woman competition in Canada.
"I wake up at five to get ready, and then at six is when I start running," said Zay Garcia, a boxer at Sparta Boxing.
"The most difficult part is probably when I have to cut weight because you have to not eat sweet stuff...sugar and it's hard to say not," said Airam Garcia, another boxer at Sparta Boxing.
Once they're in the gym and hear that beeping sound, it's time to unleash the beast.
The girls say this is their first big competition and also their first in another country.
The Sparta boxing coach says this competition is important to show what the valley is made of and hopes to inspire other boxing gyms.
"My goal is to one day make a champion of the valley, not just one. I want for the world to know the Imperial Valley all the time like everywhere. I want to have not just one champion but two champions at all times," said Alan Ruiz, Sparta Boxing coach.
Two of the girls competing are 13-years-old, another is 16-years-old and the oldest is 28.
They all say they are ready to bring championship belts from Canada to the Valley.
The girls are expected to compete in Canada from May 23 to May 25. Click here for their GoFundMe page.
