High School Madness 2025: Southwest High School claims victory in epic showdown

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The energy was electric at the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds as thousands of students came together for High School Madness, the region's biggest pep rally of the year.

Seven schools brought their loudest cheers and fiercest competition, but in the end, Southwest High School took home the victory.

Final Standings:

Southwest High School – First Place
Central Union High School – Second Place
Calexico High School – Third Place

The annual event featured relay races, human pyramids, and tug-of-war. The grandstands were packed with students waving school flags, flashing posters, and chanting their fight songs.

"It's like a giant pep rally, but with seven different schools. Everyone’s cheering for their own team, but at the same time, we're all part of this one big, crazy event. It's really fun to see that rivalry and support at the same time," said Layla Morales, a junior at Calipatria High School.

Adding to the excitement, cheerleaders and drumlines from each school took the stage, delivering high-energy performances that had the entire crowd on its feet.

"There really isn't a lot here in the Valley, so this is one of the few things we have that brings everyone together. It's always one of the most exciting nights of the year," said Jude Godinez, a junior at Brawley Union High School.

Organizers say the event is designed to give students a space to celebrate their schools in a positive and safe way.

"We don't usually let any adults in here—we let the kids have their moment. Of course, we have security to keep it safe, but this is their time. They plan this, and I just help make it happen," said Head Advisor Anne Irigoyen.

With another High School Madness in the books, students are already counting down to next year's competition, where the battle for the top spot will start all over again.
