Wiest Lake to reopen on Friday
Recently, Wiest Lake was reported to have signs of dangerous toxins from algae in its water
IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - After its temporary closure, Wiest Lake will be reopened to the public for recreational activities.
The Imperial County Department of Public Works (ICDPW) announced the lake will reopen on Friday, June 30.
ICDPW said they determined that bacteria levels in the lake have decreased significantly and are now below the recommended safety thresholds.
Officials said they will continue to monitor the lake's water quality regularly to maintain a safe environment.
The Imperial County Executive Office asks visitors to adhere to the following guidelines for Wiest Lake:
1. Respect the Environment: Help us preserve the natural beauty of the lake by not littering and disposing of waste in designated areas.
2. Stay Informed: Stay updated on any advisories or announcements related to Wiest Lake through the County of Imperial’s social media pages and local media sources.
3. Water Safety: Be mindful of water safety measures and follow any posted signs or instructions. It is always important to exercise caution when swimming or participating in water sports. While the bacteria levels are currently low, caution-level signage will be visible. In addition, please keep domesticated animals (i.e. dogs, cats, pets, etc.) away from and out of the lake, as there is a possibility they could consume material that has the potential to cause illness.
4. Report any Issues: If you notice any unusual water conditions or experience health-related concerns after visiting Wiest Lake, please report them to the park authorities immediately or call (442) 265-1823.
