Imperial Valley residents brace for possible Hurricane Kay rainfall

One local says his trailer park could quickly flood - News 11's Wiley Jawhary reports

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - El Centro residents are getting ready for the rainfall that Hurricane Kay could bring into the Valley.

Residents were lining up to get sandbags as they also prepared for possible flash flooding. Hundreds waited and some for almost an hour preparing for Hurricane Kay's rainfall.

Cris Lopez is an El Centro resident and is not taking any chances.

"I live in a trailer park, so the structure of my place is not the best," he said.

"Lopez says in the past, his neighborhood would flood, and the water sometimes would get too close for comfort.
This time around he says he wants to leave no doubt as to whether or not he's prepared.

"I do not want to wake up and find my place to be an indoor swimming pool, I would not want that," he said.

Lopez says the past has taught him, his trailer park can't handle much water.

Fire crews, city employees, and even the mayor had all hands on deck today to help others prepare. Andrew Duarte was one volunteer who said it brought him joy seeing the community come together.

"I usually work at the Pavillions as a recreation leader, we are out here today helping those who need assistance," he said.

El Centro's Fire Chief Cedric Cesena says it's better to be safe than sorry.

"With the potential of up to 2 inches of rain in the county it is not normal for our area so It's always important to be prepared, the last time you might have seen this type of rain you don't recall," he said.

As for Lopez, he knows he did his part, the rest is up to mother nature.
