The impact of COVID-19 response in the Valley - News 11's Arlette Yousif reports

El Centro, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia is spending his Friday in the Valley. With many stops on the agenda, he made sure to discuss Imperial County’s COVID response as well as the election recall.

After a slow start, the Valley’s COVID response is making strides. Herd immunity is not so far-fetched anymore. Asm. Garcia, also getting his COVID-19 vaccine during his busy day.

"Imperial County has some of the lowest COVID-19 cases that we’ve seen since the pandemic has begun. And in California, we have some of the lowest, if not the lowest COVID-19 cases in the country," says Asm. Garcia.

He says it’s all thanks to state officials.

"I think the governor’s decisions and his team, along with the legislature has uh, really had a lotta work that’s gone into making sure that we minimize the impact of covid-19 fatalities. It’s unfortunate that we did see almost 60,000 lives lost. But again the early decisions that were made, we’ll never know how many lives were saved," says Asm. Garcia.

The timing of this comes as California governor Gavin Newsom has been recalled and a new election is underway for his seat. Candidate campaigns have already begun… but the current governor seems to still have support from his own party.

"I think the governor will defeat this recall and we’ll be standing in support of him," Asm. Garcia explains.

Assemblymember Garcia also made his way to see Dr. Vo to get his vaccine. Without hesitation, he is now inoculated.

"I, you know, made the decision to take the vaccine that was available and that’s Johnson and Johnson. I feel okay. We’re gonna be okay. We know that now we’re protected and protecting our families and those around us," says Asm. Garcia.

He says he will continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated to protect one another and get back to normalcy.

The assemblymember is very involved with the community during his visits to Imperial County and neighboring counties every Friday.
