Suspect previously convicted of luring a minor

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents say they've arrested a human smuggler, and, it turns out the accused smuggler already has a sex offense conviction.

Agents say they pulled over a car near Silsbee Road and Evan Hewes Highway just before 12:30 Wednesday morning. Inside the car they found three men; a 29-year-old U.S. citizen, and two Mexican nationals.

Processing revealed the driver was convicted of luring a minor in Imperial County in June of 2016. He spent a little over three-months in jail, and another three-years on probation. Agents say he'll now face federal charges of human smuugling.

The two Mexican nationals with the suspect were taken back across the border and released.

Since the start of the 2020 fiscal year, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have arrested and/or removed 36 individuals who were either convicted on, or wanted for, sexual offenses.
