CBP warns against prohibited plants

SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) wants to remind those celebrating Día de los Muertos to leave certain prohibited plants and produce behind.

CBP does not allow several popular Día de los Muertos decorations, including orange jasmine, from entering the United States.

CBP said while the greenery may look nice it can also carry the Asian citrus psyllid, a small insect capable of of spreading citrus huanglongbing.

It is also known as HLB or citrus greening, CBP said.

HLB is one of the most serious citrus diseases worldwide and can kill citrus trees and reduce citrus production.

CBP also prevents several fruits, tomatoes, and pepper plants.

Travelers who fail to follow the rules could face penalties ranging from $500 to $250,000, CBP said.
