Former U.S. Army officer who killed 13 at Fort Hood will be executed by firing squad

(NBC, KYMA) - Nidal Hasan, a former U.S. Army officer convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, will be put to death by firing squad, according to the Department of Defense.

This will be the first time the military has executed someone by firing squad since the Second World War.

A Defense Department spokesman said the method of execution was recommended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and approved by President Donald Trump.

In November of 2009, Hasan, a former major and psychiatrist, opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas.

Thirteen people were killed and 32 others wounded.

His motivation, according to prosecutors, was his unwillingness to be deployed to Afghanistan and by a sense of duty to Jihad to kill as many American soldiers as possible.

Authorities did said he acted alone.
