Shots fired at U.S. consulate in Toronto, police say

TORONTO (NBC, KYMA) - Canadian authorities said the U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto was the target of gunfire early Tuesday morning.

Toronto Police say multiple shots were fired. However, they are not able to provide an exact number at this time.

They say they do not believe any of the bullets penetrated the bulletproof glass at the exterior of the building.

Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo says a white Honda CRV stopped in front of the consulate. At which point, two people emerged from the vehicle and discharged what appears to have been a handgun at the front of the building.

"There has also been some evidence to suggest that the shooting, the firearm discharge, may have taken place as early as 429 in the morning," Deputy Chief Barredo shared.

He says the vehicle was last seen headed southbound on University Avenue. Police have released a surveillance camera image of the suspect vehicle.

Chris Leather, Chief Superintendent of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), also spoke during the press conference Tuesday.

"Our community has experienced a deeply concerning incident, and I went again by acknowledging the worry and uncertainty many people are feeling today. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, as well as those who may be feeling unsettled by what has occurred. At this stage, I can confirm that the RCMP is working closely with the Toronto Police Service and our international partners who will assist us in a fulsome investigation into the shooting that took place overnight, early this morning at the American Consulate. Behind us, the RCMP integrated national security enforcement team INSET, GTA has permanent position for members of the Toronto Police Service, which further increase our capacity to conduct these investigations in real time with established and strong relationships, intelligence, sharing and tactics. At this time, the inset team has been engaged as this is a national security incident, and we are working with Toronto Police and others to understand the motivations of those involved."
