Three arrested, umpire injured following brawl during youth baseball tournament in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (NBC, KYMA) - A youth baseball tournament in central Florida turned violent over the weekend, leaving an umpire injured and several people under arrest.

The Winter Haven Police Department (WHPD) say a fight broke out Saturday evening at the Chain of Lakes Complex during a travel baseball tournament.

Officers responded around 6:20 p.m. Eastern and found a 21-year-old umpire injured, along with his father who was watching from the stands.

Investigators say the violence began after the umpire issued a verbal warning to a team's coach.

WHPD report the umpire's father was then assaulted by a player's parent, and when the umpire stepped in, he was punched from behind and knocked to the ground as others joined the fight.

The umpire was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Three people, including a coach, a parent, and a 17-year-old were arrested and charged with battery on a sports official.
