Mexicali suspect arrested for extortion at the Calexico Port of Entry

CALEXICO. Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - A Mexicali man was arrested for extortion after he went to an exchange house demanding $6,000.

The Calexico Police Department (CPD) says the suspect handed a note to a teller where he claimed he was part of an organized crime group and demanded the money last week.

Police say the teller took a long to hand over the money which made the suspect uncomfortable making him leave the business.

Calexico police say the suspect was arrested at the port of entry after he tried to re-enter Calexico Monday afternoon.

"Following his arrest...he was brought here to [CPD]...he was interviewed and during the interview he admitted fully that he acted alone and he is not part of a criminal organization and he admitted to the full thing," said Officer Nicolas Monninger with CPD.

CPD says the business owners helped them solve this case by providing tips and surveillance video.

The suspect is being held at the Imperial County Jail. He is being charged with attempted robbery and extortion.
