Security camera captures a dog being dumped on the side of the road
SURPRISE, Ariz. (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - An investigation is underway after a dog was let out of a vehicle, seemingly on purpose, on the side of a street in Surprise, Arizona over the weekend.
The incident was all caught on camera, but it is what the camera picked up right before the dog was let go that has one neighbor absolutely furious.
A simple change in direction on an afternoon walk around her Surprise neighborhood led Joanna Buesen to be at the right place at the right time to witness something so wrong.
"I was angered. I was flabbergasted, shocked...just so many emotions," Buesen expressed.
The moment was caught on surveillance video Saturday by a neighbor's cameras pointing at Peoria Avenue, next to the desert.
In the video, the door of a red SUV opens and out jumps a dog. The vehicle then takes off, and the dog starts chasing it. The video also captures the dog walking towards Buesen when she calls to him out of frame.
"It was defeated. It was sad," Buesen shared.
What ticks Buesen off the most is the audio the cameras picked up, right before the dog was dumped, the driver of the SUV said, "Bye, bye."
"I think that they had no remorse for their actions, and I think that is the tell-tale that that is malicious intent," Buesen remarked. "I understand things are hard and things can be tough in life, but you don't have to be a soulless human."
Neighbors, like Kim Igo, calling it heartless: "We've seen them dumping all kinds of other things, but not animals. That's just...that's a new level. A new level of just...Ugh."
Buesen rescued the dog, who she says was malnourished and is now with Surprise Animal Control.
Police say they're getting lots of tips and investigating what could be a felony crime.
"Anything that's innocent deserves justice. I honestly believe that," Buesen said.
More than justice, Buesen hopes this dog gets a new home soon.
Animal cruelty is a felony in Arizona.
