U.S. Secret Service shoots armed man near White House
WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - U.S. Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting near the White House early Sunday morning following an encounter with an armed person of interest.
According to a statement from the Secret Service, local police shared information about a potentially "suicidal individual" who may be traveling to Washington, D.C. from Indiana.
Around midnight, members of the Secret Service located the individual's parked car, and then saw a man on foot fitting the man's description.
After making contact, the suspect reportedly displayed a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Andrew Dawson from North Manchester, Indiana, according to two sources who told NBC News, was hit and taken to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
No Secret Service personnel were injured.
The D.C. Police Department (DCPD) will lead the investigation into the shooting.
