WINTERHAVEN, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - One Yuma man is behind bars after being accused of murdering a father and injuring that man's son.
41-year-old Jesus Galindo was fatally shot on Sapphire Lane and Turquoise Circle on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24.
His 20-year-old son was also shot multiple times.
There are flowers and candles laid out on the sidewalk nearby where Galindo lost his life.
Galindo's aunt Gail Johns says he'll be deeply missed.
"He was a real funny guy. You know, told his jokes and a lot of BSing around with him whenever we can get together but he showed a lot of affection to everybody that was his friends and stuff like that," reflects Johns. "He was a wonderful guy."
Imperial County Sheriff's Office (ICSO) Chief Deputy Manuel De Leon says ICSO's Deputies and officers from the Quechan Police Department responded to the scene and began life saving measures until paramedics arrived.
"They were transported to Yuma Regional," says De Leon. "We were later notified that one of the victims passed away, died as a result as a result of gunshots."
His son did make it out alive and is no longer in the hospital.
Johns says Jesus also known as Jesse, was in the car with his kids when they were shot.
"You know, I was kind of sad that this shooter did this while all his kids were in there. Like I said, he was just trying to protect them, and he ends up getting shot and then killing him," says Johns. "And then let alone, what happened to his son but the but the baby was in the vehicle too from what I hear from what Rosie was saying. He took the family out to go do shopping in town, come back a couple hours later, this what happened."
Deputies found the suspect, 22-year-old Bishap Laurenzana just two blocks away from the shooting after questioning several witnesses
Johns says Galindo's family feels some relief he was caught.
"We just all hope that he'll be put away. You know it was uncalled for," continues Johns. "He didn't even know the man or the boy, the young man."
The suspect is now in the Imperial County Jail, facing one count of murder along with other charges.
