Two officers shot, three others killed in Northern Phoenix shootout
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - At least three people were killed and two officers were injured after a shootout Sunday night in northern Phoenix.
Authorities say two officers were responding to reports of a shooting in the area, shortly before 9 pm and officers were immediately under fire once they arrived on scene.
The officers responded by returning fire as the alleged shooter retracted.
According to authorities, the suspect was later found dead while two other people were killed in the shooting and several others were injured.
"This is another example of gun violence in our community," said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri WIlliams. "It's another example of gun violence in our country. Which is why the phoenix police department is focused on identifying, arresting and bringing to justice those individuals who commit gun violence."
The two officers shot were transported to the hospital and are expected to survive.
An investigation is underway.
