Local nonprofit offering people the chance at paradise with a fundraiser drawing

The Annual Week in Paradise fundraiser provides victims with the aid they need

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It's become one of the region's most anticipated drawings. A chance to win a vacation and all it cost is $10.

But, while many enter the contest as a way to escape the monotony of their daily lives, the money raised goes to help those looking to escape a living hell.

On a daily basis, law enforcement faces scenes of domestic violence and sexual brutality that most wouldn't be able to stomach. And, in most cases, neighbors and family members aren't aware of the abuse or fail to report it.

It's for this reason that victim advocates like those at Amberly's Place want to get the word out to victims out there. Their message is simple "you're not alone".

Although the fundraiser is meant to be a festive event, the reality is without these funds the nonprofit wouldn't be able to do what they do.

A growing misconception is that nonprofits like Amberly's Place receive funding from grants. Most if not all nonprofits do receive grants which in most cases only cover infrastructure, which means they pay for rent, utilities, and salaries.

So, when it comes to a victim escaping for their very lives with only the clothes on their back. There's no grant money for that, if they need diapers, formula, or even medication, no grants for those items either.

On Wednesday, April 1, Amberly's Place held its first drawing deemed the Early Bird Drawing for those people who had already bought a ticket. The winner of that drawing won a season pass to Waylon's Water World.

For those that lost, well their names have been placed back into the drum to possibly be pulled on June 25. That's when the Week in Paradise drawing will take place and ticket holders will be playing for ten incredible trips.
