Police identify man killed after crash in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - UPDATE

Police identify the man that died last Friday after crashing into a wooden road barrier.

The Yuma Police Department identified the passenger as 44 year old John Heidmiller.

ORIGINAL STORY

Yuma Police Department (YPD) responded to a report of a vehicle collision with injuries in the 8800 block of Avenue 8 ½ E, Friday evening at approximately 9:23.

Initial investigation revealed a 2002 GMC Sierra collided with a wooden road barrier. A 16-year-old female was driving the vehicle, accompanied by a 44-year-old male in the passenger seat.

The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Correspondingly, the driver was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, and the case is still under investigation. 

Officers encourage anyone with any information about this case to please call the YPD at (928) 373-4700 or 78-Crime at (928) 782-7463 to remain anonymous.

April Hettinger

April was born and raised in San Diego where she loved the beach town and her two dogs, Lexi and Malibu. She decided to trade the beach for the snow and advanced her education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. After a short 3 ½ years, she earned bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with minors in Journalism and Spanish but gained memories and friendships she will always remember.

She began her broadcast journalism career through NAZ Today, northern Arizona’s local news station, by covering breaking news, building relationships with the community, learning to produce a newscast and anchoring live. Although she will miss her snowy mountain town, she is excited to further her broadcast career and take on the heat in a great city like Yuma.

She is looking forward to floating down at the Colorado River, riding dirt bikes at the sand dunes, and most importantly, serving the community through local news.
