Local zip code earns dubious distinction
85364 becomes first in Arizona to hit 1,000 coronavirus cases
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - New data from the Arizona Department of Health Services shows the Yuma zip code 85364 has earned a dubious distinction - it's the first zip code in the state to reach 1,000 coronavirus cases. The news doesn't get much better, the zip code also has the highest concentration of positive cases in Arizona.
Statistics show Somerton, with the 85350 zip code, has the second highest case concentration. That area currently has 896 cases.
The statistics may surprise some people, because larger counties, like Maricopa or Pima, have so many more residents than Yuma. However, those counties also contain far more zip codes, so the sample size for each is much smaller.
The new numbers come on the same day Yuma County's Mayors joined with the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors to issue a "call to action" to residents. The proclamation urges people to practice CDC guidelines vigilantly to curb the surge the county has seen over the past two weeks.
