Visitors Information Center reopens to tourists and Yuma residents
The Colorado River State Park and Territorial Prison will stay closed.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - While some nearby attractions are still closed, the Yuma Visitors Information Center reopened, this week, after closing, in the midst of the pandemic.
Tourists and even Yuma residents rely on the visitor center for great ways to experience everything yuma has to offer.
"We felt like it was time to add a personal touch and you know we’ve all been distance from each other for a while now and we were missing the communication between each other and so we thought this was the way to go about it.”
The reopening of the Yuma Visitors Information Center comes as those start to venture out from their homes again.
Jennifer McDonald is the Marketing Coordinator for Visit Yuma.
"We have so many resources inside there to inspire you to get out and do something while you’re staying safe and social distancing,” she said.
The info center also helping Yuma snow birds who are staying a bit longer than expected due to the virus.
"We want to offer them resources for things that they’re not used to doing as the weather is getting warmer we wanna help them enjoy the rest of their extended time here while they’re in Yuma," said McDonald.
While being closed, they took time to re-evaluate the way they keep their guests safe.
That includes proper social distancing, sanitizing heavily touched areas and they will only allow up to ten people inside at a time.
Leslie McClendon is a Yuma City Council-member and Group Sales Manager for Visit Yuma.
"We have the plexiglass to keep the employees and our customers safe. We stay open 30 minutes longer at the end of the day to clean and we do that before we open so the customers are number one on thing that we want to keep in mind,” said McClendon.
As far as being open again.
"When you think about the couple months that we’ve all been trying to stay home stay safe; it’s just nice to know that when you walk into a building you’re greeted your ear happy to see each other and and we have a lot to offer,” McClendon added.
McDonald explains why reopening these doors is beneficial to the community.
“I like to think of our visitor information center as a hub of so many resources. We can tell you where the best fishing spots are, we can tell you were beach areas are that you didn’t know that before, we can lead you to great murals.”
Although the visitors center shares land with the Colorado River State Park and infamous Yuma Territorial Prison. Those two attractions will remain closed, for now.
