Mayor Sanchez points to rising number of coronavirus cases within the city

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - San Luis Mayor Gerardo Sanchez took to social media Monday evening to urge his residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary.

In posts to Facebook and Instagram, Mayor Sanchez says cases of coronavirus have tripled since last Wednesday. He says there are now 112 cases within the city's zip code.

The number of coronavirus cases in Yuma County rose to 443 on Monday. Health officials also report one additional death. It bears noting, cases inside the Yuma County Prison Complex are now included in the county statistics. That could be partially responsible for today's spike in cases.

In addition, health officials have long predicted the number of cases would rise as testing increased. The Arizona Testing Blitz enters its fourth week next Saturday. Since it started, three weeks ago, more than a thousand people across Yuma County have been tested. More clinics are planned for next weekend.
