Food drive in San Luis helps those in financial need
SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Sunday morning the Gethsemani Baptist Church food ministry in San Luis held a meat drive for members of the community.
This, in an effort to help out during this uncertain time. Over 15 volunteers gathered at the church parking lot and started passing out boxes of meat and other items, as cars lined-up for blocks.
Volunteers also gave candy and toys to children present in honor of Mexico's "El Dia del Niño," also known as Children's Day.
They also provided entertainment in the form of clowns and even raffled- off bicycles for children.
While following CDC recommendations and maintaining social distancing, members of the community lined up in their cars for donations.
"[It] personally warms my heart that there are people who need this help," said Ruth Castro, a church member.
"Like you said there [are] people who lost their job and have no income and personally it warms my heart to help them in this way".
The event started at 10:30 a.m. and lasted for an hour. The food ministry says it has handed-out nearly 20 thousand boxes of meat to families in financial need.
To help keep order, the San Luis Police Department assisted with traffic.
