First responders of El Centro bowls with individuals with autism
Autism Support of Imperial County hosted their 2nd annual bowling event with first responders for autism awareness month.
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Autism Support of Imperial County (ASIC) hosted a social event at StrikeZone on Wednesday for individuals with autism to have some fun bowling with El Centro's first responders.
James Gonzalez, President of ASIC said they host this event for everyone to have a good time and to be out in the community for those that are on the spectrum and for the first responders.
He wants to help create socialization for individuals with autism.
"We're hoping that this is an opportunity where individuals on the spectrum are able to get out of their homes during spring break and really be able to open up a little bit. It allows them to be more part of the community which is something that individuals with autism tend to shy away from," said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said over 20 firefighter cadets from Imperial Valley College attended and only about three El Centro firefighters because many had to leave to help fight a fire in Calexico.
ASIC said many families registered for this event and had a great turnout. They are appreciative for the first responders that made it out to the event because it makes an impact to those that are on the spectrum.
Gonzalez said he wants to continue this tradition by keeping "Bowling with First Responders" an annual event because social events like this, help kids with autism come out of their shell.
