Wednesday marks six years since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic

(CBS, KYMA) - On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 (officially known as SARS-CoV-2) a pandemic, "after more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths" according to the CDC's website detailing a timeline of the pandemic.

Two days later, on March 13, 2020, the Trump Administration declared a nationwide emergency and issued an additional travel ban on non-U.S. citizens traveling from 26 European countries due to COVID-19.

The World Health Organization ended the global emergency status for COVID-19 on May 5, 2023, more than three years after its original declaration, although the virus still mutates to other strains with a yearly vaccine recommended by doctors.

Over one million people died from coronavirus in the United States during the pandemic.
