El Centro Police Officer passes away from COVID-19

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) confirmed Wednesday the death of police officer Efren Coronel, from complications due to the coronavirus.

ECPD posted on their Facebook account confirming the passing stating that officer Coronel, 51-years-old, had contracted the coronavirus while on duty and peacefully passed away.

Officer Coronel was said to be a senior patrol officer and the officer in charge for his patrol team.

On the Facebook post, it states that Officer Coronel served on ECPD for 24 years before he passed away. He is described as someone who "loved volunteering his time supporting youth programs and coaching youth soccer."

Officer Coronel leaves behind a wife and two children.
