Cases in Sorora rise by 16

HERMOSILLO, Sonora (KYMA, KECY) - In his daily press conference, the Sonora Secretary of Health announced two new deaths and 16 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases statewide.

There are now 47 deaths and 550 cases statewide.

While San Luis Rio Colorado (SLRC) had been leading the state in cases and deaths since Sonora began tracking the pandemic, the Sonora Secretary of Health, Enrique Clausen Iberri announced no additional cases or deaths in the city.

This is the second day in a row where the death toll in SLRC remains at 184.

Iberri reports the first death concerned a 47-year-old woman who first experienced respiratory symptoms on April 16.

She was booked into a the General Hospital of Sonora on April 22, and then transported to a different hospital where she tested positive for coronavirus.

Iberri says her condition quickly deteriorated due to existing health conditions such as obesity. She passed away Friday at midnight.

The second death was a 55-year-old man, who first experienced respiratory symptoms on April 26. Iberri says he was transferred to a hospital where he was put on a respirator. He had various exixting health conditoins, which exaserbated his death shortly after.

Of the 16 new cases in Sonora, Iberri says 12 are men and 4 are women.

Since there is not yet a vaccination for COVID-19, Iberri said a "return to normal" in Sonora must be closely monitored in order to ensure safety.

He also announced the start of Sonora's economic recovery put in place by Governor Pavlovich Arellano. Iberri says certain businesses will open, but they must follow rigorous sanitation protocols.
