B-52s receive star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - A legendary new wave band received one of music's most iconic honors as the B-52s were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The B-52s added a star to their legacy on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Band members Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Keith Strickland gathered for the unveiling ceremony Thursday in front of Amoeba Music.

Richard Blade, award-winning SiriusXM radio personality and Walk of Famer, served as the ceremony's emcee, along with actor and comedian Fred Armisen and the Go-Go's serving as guest speakers.

The honor came just ahead of the band's Southern California performances, with a show scheduled in Chula Vista Friday before wrapping up the Cosmic De-Evolution tour Saturday in Palm Desert.

The B-52s formed in Athens, Georgia in October 1976, following a night out at a Chinese restaurant. They then played their first show at a friend's house on Valentine's Day the following year.

Named after a southern slang term for exaggerated bouffant hairstyles, the group quickly developed a following, making trips to New York City to perform at legendary venues like CBGB.

Their breakthrough came with the 1978 release of "Rock Lobster," followed by their self-titled debut album in 1979.

The record went on to sell more than a million copies, earning platinum certification.

Nearly five decades after forming, the B-52s have now secured a permanent place among Hollywood's celebrated stars, another milestone for a band whose music continues to get people on their feet.
