CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Dog in San Diego greets intruder

SAN DIEGO (NBC, KYMA) - The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is investigating a break-in earlier this month at a home in Sherman Heights.

The intruder was in the house for half an hour.

The family watched it all unfold through their security app on their phones, and they were surprised by what they saw.

In the heat of the day, a stranger sought shelter in Dante Rowley's house near the corner of 20th and J Streets.

Rowley's six-camera security system recorded the break-in. The suspect used his two-story ladder hidden behind his shed to get to an open second story window.

"We just watched it all happen from my phone," Rowley shared.

The intruder took off his shoes and shirt, and took a seat on the bench in the foyer for a while. He ate yogurt, turkey and cheese from the fridge. He then took a nap.

The alleged burglar was not alone. Inside were also two of Dante's three dogs: Oli the long-haired Dachshund and Nash the 90-pound four-year-old Golden Retriever.

"The dogs, we just wanted to make sure they were safe," Rowley spoke.

About Nash, he's more cuddlier than killer, and if you break into the house, he's going to stop you for a belly rub or maybe a toy to play with, and the evidence is in the recording. Not once, or twice but three times, Nash brought the intruder a toy so they could play.

"Nash is not the greatest guard dog. We thought that he would be barking at people and he did the exact opposite," Rowley spoke.

Even after SDPD arrived, not distracted by the drama, Nash had a toy to greet them at the front door.

The suspect attempted an escape through a first-floor bathroom window.

He was met by police in the backyard, handcuffed and taken into custody.

"We just hope he gets some help honestly," Rowley expressed.

As for Nash, he's still in the doghouse for his behavior.

Rowley said the intruder is charged with burglary, and also had outstanding charges from unrelated incidents.
